Think Pink!

This weekend seems to have taken on a bit of a pink theme in the MeowCakes kitchen. Yesterday's MeowCakes project was an adorable treat for my coworker, who is a total trooper and is running around a restaurant serving food while 6 months pregnant. We recently found out she's expecting a little girl and   she asked me to make some cupcakes for her baby shower today. This morning I filled a birthday order for Strawberries & Cream and Coconut Cupcakes...and I decided these cupcakes were the perfect opportunity to showcase a new MeowCakes signature item: coloured coconut topping! Since I was already on a pink kick, I figured why not go all out and make the first batch of coloured coconut cupcakes raging hot pink. I'm thrilled with the results, and hopefully the birthday girl is too!

It's A Girl!

Baby bottles!

Baby shoes are one of those things that make me melt.
They're just so itty bitty!

If only they actually slept this much.

I grew up calling this a 'dummy'...apparently it's a pacifier.

Another one on the way for the team!

I had to stick these feet back on about 5 times...
remind me never to have an actual child.

zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Congratulations Nadene!

Strike A Pose

Oh hi! Just a quick line to try out the new blog layout(still being tweaked) and to share some fantastic shots of MeowCakes done by the talented Theresa Le of tsaCreations in Chilliwack! I'm absolutely stunned by the effort and the results of this little project and highly recommend her photography services. Check out Theresa's work here, and in the meantime take a look at what she can do with a little cupcake and a lot of skill!

MeowCakes Lately...

I've been missing in action lately on the blog front, and there's several very good reasons for that. Well, mostly one big reason. Last week I dotted the i's and crossed the t's on my very last undergraduate paper and officially finished my degree! I'm definitely excited, but it's one of those life events that brings up a billion different emotions you never thought you'd have. For the last 18-odd years of my life, I've been a student. Even working full time, I've always defined myself as a student. When people ask me what I do, I tell them I go to school. That is just no longer the case, and it's the weirdest feeling in the world. So now, I'm not a student- I'm a person who waitresses but doesn't want to be a waitress, a person who should be out looking for a job in my field or something that will make use of my outrageously expensive education. Sometimes I go online and find these jobs. I think, "I can do this with my eyes closed" or "That's interesting, I'll apply for it later." But I never ever do. I don't want an office job. I would rather staple things to my face than spend my day working 9-5 and doing paperwork for someone else's business. I'm barely 22 years old, I'm not ready to sit down in a cubicle and start my daily grind. I want to do the things that make me happy and be responsible for no one but myself- right now that means expanding MeowCakes and working hard to make sure I can do other things that make me happy, like seeing the world. This little cupcake hobby has taken off more than I ever would have expected and for that I'm so grateful. Even when things don't quite work out as planned (see wobbly Harley Davidson logos below) everyone is consistently so supportive and encouraging, which is really all anyone can ask for. When I first started this blog seven months ago, I captioned it "adventures of a working student and wannabe cupcaker"(there I go again, defining myself by my academic status). Now , I think it's time to ditch that 'wannabe' preface. So, I'm just a cupcaker, and this is what I've been up to lately.

Normally I'd practice something like this beforehand, but this short notice order left no time.
I'm not totally thrilled with these, but given that they're only a few inches in diameter I think
they turned out pretty well!

The Stray Cats are a fave Rockabilly band of the lucky recipient of these
birthday cakes, and this is their hand-painted fondant logo!

Difficult decorations are exciting for me- I get to improve my techniques and learn new things.
Even if they don't come out perfectly, I know they will next time!

Nice and simple- Cookies and Cream Cupcakes!

Blueberry Lemonade Cupcakes: Lemon Cake with Blueberry Swirl, topped
with  fresh bluberry compote and blueberry cream cheese frosting.

Homemade Dulce de Leche for Banoffee Pie Cupcakes...
which I obviously forgot to snap pictures of. :(

Rainbow Sprinkle Birthday Minis for a special 2-year-old.

Thomas the Tank Engine....decades later and it's still a favourite.

:)

I feel so old when my friends have 2-year olds!

Purple & Grey was the theme for these engagement cupcakes. So this raspberry-vanilla
cake is dyed purple and topped with a light grey raspberry buttercream...

...then petal dusted with silver, and topped with silver
fondant pearls and purple hearts!
